Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pdf

Oh, the torment bred in the race,
the grinding scream of death
and the stroke that hits the vein,
the hemorrhage none can staunch, the grief,
the curse no man can bear.

But there is a cure in the house,
and not outside it, no,
not from others but from them,
their bloody strife. We sing to you,
dark gods beneath the earth.

Now hear, you blissful powers underground –
answer the call, send help.
Bless the children, give them triumph now.

Aeschylus, The Libation Bearers

Death is but crossing the world, as friends do the seas; they live in one another still. For they must needs be present, that love and live in that which is omnipresent. In this divine glass, they see face to face; and their converse is free, as well as pure. This is the comfort of friends, that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal.

William Penn, More Fruits of Solitude

CHAPTER ONE

THE DARK LORD ASCENDING

The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands directed at each other’s chests; then, recognizing each other, they stowed their wands be- neath their cloaks and started walking briskly in the same direction. “News?” asked the taller of the two.

“The best,” replied Severus Snape.
The lane was bordered on the left by wild, low-growing brambles, on the right by a high, neatly manicured hedge. The men’s long cloaks flapped around their ankles as they marched.

“Thought I might be late,” said Yaxley, his blunt features sliding in and out of sight as the branches of overhanging trees broke the moonlight. “It was a little trickier than I expected. But I hope he will be satisfied. You sound confident that your reception will be good?”

QUICK TAKE:
Drama/Adventure: A teenage wizard and his friends continue their quest to find and destroy dark magic objects that contain parts of the soul of their increasingly powerful arch-nemesis in this seventh installment of the 'Harry Potter' series.
PLOT:
In this seventh installment of the 'Harry Potter' series, Hogwarts leader Professor Albus Dumbledore (MICHAEL GAMBON) has been killed and Lord Voldemort (RALPH FIENNES) has taken over the Ministry of Magic, with former Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Dolores Umbridge (IMELDA STAUNTON) determining the fate of any number of Muggles.

At a meeting of fellow evil-doers -- that includes Death Eaters Bellatrix Lestrange (HELENA BONHAM CARTER) and Wormtail (TIMOTHY SPALL), as well as the father-son duo, Lucius Malfoy (JASON ISAACS) and Draco Malfoy (TOM FELTON), and others -- Voldemort announces his plan to kill Harry Potter (DANIEL RADCLIFFE) and thus rid himself of the last obstacle to complete domination.

Following the late words of former Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour (BILL NIGHY), various regulars at Hogwarts realize these are dark times and that Harry is most likely in danger. Accordingly, the likes of Rubeus Hagrid (ROBBIE COLTRANE), Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody (BRENDAN GLEESON), Remus Lupin (DAVID THEWLISS), along with Harry's best friends and fellow students, Hermione Granger (EMMA WATSON) and Ron Weasley (RUPERT GRINT), sneak him off to safety.

Realizing they need to find and destroy a number of dark magic objects -- known as Horcruxes that contain part of Voldemort's soul -- to defeat the evil Lord, Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on that quest. Along the way, they receive insight and help from the like of house elves Kreacher (SIMON McBURNEY) and Dobby (voice of TOBY JONES), magic historian Bathilda Bagshot (HAZEL DOUGLAS), and Xenophilius Lovegood (RHYS IFANS) -- father to the trio's classmate, Luna Lovegood (EVANNA LYNCH) -- who informs them of three legendary and powerful objects from the Deathly Hallows that may prove to be their salvation or undoing.

(Note: The 'Our Take' review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this drama/adventure that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of a handful of minor expletives, while some colorful phrases are also uttered. There's an imagined scene of sensuality (that's created by an evil force to drive a character into jealousy) that shows Harry and Hermione in a fully nude standing embrace (with making out), but wispy clouds obscure any explicit nudity. Another scene has a female teen who's been magically made to look like a male and then strips to change clothes, thus showing her/him in a bra that's then removed (to show a male chest), and a male teen strips to his boxers to enter a body of water. Other brief kissing also occurs.

Violence consists of several deaths, a bad injury, and various scenes of fighting and battles using magic wands, while others are hit, manhandled and/or threatened, and some property damage also occurs. Some of that has bloody results (including one instance that has a very graphic, but quickly (and magically) healed wound, and those scenes, various visuals, moments of peril and scenes of a huge snake striking out at the camera could be unsettling, suspenseful and/or scary to some viewers.

Bad attitudes are present, as is potentially imitative behavior. Tense family material is present, as is a little bit of crude humor, while some alcohol may be present at a wedding.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that from camera flashes early in the film. There's also some of that from lightning in the clouds in a later scene, and there are flashes of light in Harry's nightmare.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there are varying amounts of shaky, handheld camerawork, as well as various POV flying scenes.

  • Glasses magically fill at a wedding reception and various people are shown holding drinks. It's unknown whether the contents are alcoholic or not.
  • We see what looks like a little blood on a woman's face.
  • Mad-Eye has others drink a potion, but warns that it tastes like 'goblin's piss,' prompting another person to ask how he knows.
  • Following an escape, Harry has a little blood on his face following an encounter with Death Eaters, while another character magically made to look like Harry has a lot of blood on the side of his neck (and he jokes that he's 'holey' while pointing to his damaged ear). Ron also has a few bloody scrapes.
  • Hermione has a tiny mark of blood on her face following a brief battle.
  • A slightly bloodied man is escorted into the Ministry of Magic that has taken on the tones of Nazism.
  • To enter the Ministry of Magic, Harry and Ron (in disguises) enter a public restroom where they go into the stalls, stand in the bowls, and then flush themselves down into the building.
  • Harry has a little bit of blood on his face, but Ron is injured far more severely, with his arm seemingly split open at his shoulder, while there's also a bloody gash on the upper section of that arm. Hermione has his blood on her hands as she uses magic to heal him.
  • Hermione starts to read the infamous story of the Deathly Hallows, and we see an animated representation of that, including when a man stabs and kills another, with bloody results (although that's monochrome in nature).
  • Harry's face is all puffy and distorted for several minutes.
  • We see the word 'mudblood' on Hermione's arm and the blood (or mud) trickles down from that.
  • Lord Voldemort breaks the top stone on Dumbledore's tomb, and goes down face to face with the corpse (not decomposed in any way) to retrieve his wand.
  • Lord Voldemort and his followers all have bad attitudes throughout the film.
  • For those opposed to magic, that occurs throughout much of the film.
  • Bellatrix states she wants to kill Harry, but Lord Voldemort says he must do so.
  • A slightly bloodied man is escorted into the Ministry of Magic that has taken on the tones of Nazism.
  • Dolores holds a Nazi style hearing (as judge and juror) regarding a Muggle, all while Death Eaters float high above them.
  • Due to wearing the Horcrux, Harry acts meanly toward Hermione until he takes it off, followed by Ron reacting the same to Harry and Hermione (and due to perceived jealousy).
  • A male Death Eater (in human form) gets right in Hermione's face, in something of a sexually intimidating fashion, after she and her friends have been captured.
  • Lord Voldemort breaks the top stone on Dumbledore's tomb, and goes down face to face with the corpse (not decomposed in any way) to retrieve his wand.
  • Scenes listed here and under 'Violence,' 'Blood/Gore' and 'Jump Scenes' may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • We see an extreme close-up of Rufus Scrimgeour's face as he states these are dark times.
  • We see a young woman with an anguished look on her face, floating upside down above a long table around which Lord Voldemort is holding a meeting of the evil. Lord Voldemort then causes her to drop hard to the table, killing her, followed by sending a giant snake (that's been slithering around the room) up to eat her (it strikes out directly at the camera).
  • Lord Voldemort takes Lucius' wand, making the latter nervous, and breaks it.
  • The image of Lord Voldemort and the various Death Eaters might be unsettling or scary to some viewers.
  • We see a slow motion view of Dumbledore falling to his death (from the last film, and no impact is seen).
  • Harry, Hermione and Ron enter a narrow hallway where a whirlwind of dust suddenly forms into a scary looking figure that races at them but then disappears.
  • We see two small and suspended bird or bat skeletons attached to strings that make their wings flap (not presented as scary, but it might be unnerving to some younger kids).
  • Harry, Hermione and Ron are nervous as they hear a sound behind a door, but it turns out to be Kreacher. Hermione nearly hits him with something, but Ron stops her.
  • Dolores holds a Nazi style hearing regarding a Muggle, all while Death Eaters float high above them. Harry, Hermione and Ron enter the room in disguises, but Harry's had enough and blasts Dolores with his wand, while Ron does the same to another and they then flee. The Death Eaters pursue them to the elevator where they reach their ghastly hands in through the metal gate until Harry blasts them away.
  • A Death Eater chases after Harry, Hermione and Ron as they flee, firing blasts of wand energy at them. They escape, but Harry has a little bit of blood on his face, and Ron is injured far more severely, with his arm seemingly split open at his shoulder, while there's also a bloody gash on the upper section of that arm. Hermione has his blood on her hands as she uses magic to heal him.
  • While on guard duty, Hermione hears a sound in the woods at night and slowly goes to investigate. She then freezes when various Death Eaters approach, including some carrying a dead or unconscious person. They can't see her due to her magic cloak spell around their campsite, but the one Death Eater can smell her perfume and thus goes back to check, and stands quite close to her (but still can't see her).
  • Harry, Hermione and Ron walk through a burned out trailer park.
  • Harry and Hermione visit Bathilda, but she acts strangely around them, thus unnerving them a bit, especially as Harry follows her through her dimly lit house. Her face then suddenly starts to distort and she dissolves down into her robe (or similar attire), and then reemerges as a huge snake that attacks Harry. It bites at him, blasts him back through a wall and coils him up, with him hitting it on the head with a brick or similar stone. Hermione then zaps the snake and they think it's dead, but it then suddenly lunges at both of them, and they're blasted back and out through a window.
  • Some kids may worry when it's revealed that Harry's wand is broken.
  • Harry seems mesmerized by a light figure in the woods that turns into a translucent deer that he follows away from camp. It then goes out onto a frozen pond, as does he, and then disappears down below the surface, revealing a sought-after sword. After breaking the ice, he strips down to his boxers and goes into the freezing water and goes to grab the sword, but the Horcrux he's wearing starts pulling him backwards, away from the hole and under the ice. He struggles and seems ready to drown, but is then rescued.
  • Ron prepares to strike a Horcrux with a sword as Harry opens the locket, but an explosive blast knocks both of them back and off their feet. A swirling mass of figures, clouds and evil then swirls about, sending spiders racing across the ground toward Ron.
  • Hermione starts to read the infamous story of the Deathly Hallows, and we see an animated representation of that. A ghastly Death character meets three men and grants them their wishes. One is to have a powerful magic wand that he then uses to kill a wizard (not seen in full). But another man then kills that first one by stabbing him (with bloody results, although that's monochrome in nature). The second brings a loved one back to life, but since she no longer fits in, he hung himself (we see him hanging there). The third willingly gives himself up to Death many years later (no violence).
  • Harry and Ron zap Death Eaters, but Bellatrix stops them by holding a knife to Hermione's throat.
  • SPOILER ALERT: Harry realizes that Dobby was hit by the knife Bellatrix threw, mortally wounding him (there's blood on the knife blood as well as his clothing). The elf then gets weaker and dies in Harry's arms.

  • Magic Wands: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others and/or cause property damage. See 'Violence' for details.
  • Rufus Scrimgeour states that Dumbledore left Harry a special sword in his will, but that it's now missing.
  • Harry spots that legendary sword beneath a frozen pond and goes to retrieve it. Later, Ron uses that to destroy a Horcrux.
  • Bellatrix zaps a Death Eater carrying a sword, followed by zapping others and hitting the rest with a whip-like device that wraps around their necks.
  • Due to either a poor audio recording or reproduction in the theater, some of the dialogue was hard to understand. That said, we heard the following phrases: 'We've got to get the hell out of here,' 'Nip it,' 'Blimey,' 'Shut it,' 'Are you mad?' 'I'm holey,' 'Bloody hell,' 'Brilliant,' 'Hey losers,' 'You foul little...' 'This is completely mental,' 'That's bloody disgusting,' 'Starting to freak out a bit,' 'Bloody cold,' 'That bloody, beaded bag of yours,' 'What happened to you, ugly?' and 'Like hell.'
  • The action and other stunts might be enticing for some kids to try to imitate.

  • Harry strips down to his boxers to enter an ice cold pond.

  • None.

  • Due to either a poor audio recording or reproduction in the theater, some of the dialogue was hard to understand. That said, we heard at least 3 hells (and another possible one), 1 damn, 1 possible ass, and 2 uses of 'Oh my God.'
  • About a woman he currently has floating upside down above his meeting of evil-minded characters, Lord Voldemort states the woman's belief was that Muggles and their kind really aren't that different and that 'she would have us mate with them.'
  • Mad-Eye gives others a potion that makes all of them look identical to Harry. That includes Hermione, and when she/he undresses to change into Harry attire, we see her/him in a bra that he/she then removes (revealing a teen boy's chest). Other males there are also seen shirtless as they similarly change clothes.
  • We see Ginny's bare back as she asks Harry to zip her up (in her dress). He does, and then the two briefly make out before being interrupted.
  • Hermione shows a little cleavage.

  • We see Ron with his shirt open as Hermione heals his bad wounds.
  • Harry and Hermione dance, playfully, followed by a hug but nothing more.
  • Harry strips down to his boxers to enter an ice cold pond.
  • A maelstrom of released evil tries to turn Ron's mind against Harry and Hermione, creating sexy images of the latter who mock him, including her asking Ron 'what woman would take you?' We then see those imaginary figures standing in a fully nude embrace, passionately kissing, but swirls of clouds and such obscure any views of explicit nudity. Ron then smashes the Horcrux with his sword and ends that display.
  • A male Death Eater (in human form) gets right in Hermione's face, in something of a sexually intimidating fashion, after she and her friends have been captured.
  • None.
  • Hallows
  • Hermione 'obliviates' (magically removes) herself from all of her family's photos (not mad at them, but to protect them as well as Harry should her image lead to Harry's capture or death).
  • A wife rejoices her freedom from Dolores and kisses Ron long and hard (thinking he's her husband since he looks like him), but then stops when Ron now looks like himself again. That woman's husband then shows up in a t-shirt and boxers and wonders what's going on.
  • Harry wants to return to his birthplace and the location where Lord Voldemort killed his parents. He and Hermione then visit that place and enter a graveyard where he's teary-eyed over seeing his parents' headstone (while we see brief flashback images of Lord Voldemort attacking Harry's parents, including sounds of screaming).
  • Xenophilius says others, not happy with his writings, took his daughter away.
  • Those who find themselves on a quest to vanquish evil.
  • Those who follow evil leaders.

  • The continued popularity of the novels and films in this series.
  • We see a newspaper headline about a Muggle family that was murdered.
  • We see a young woman with an anguished look on her face, floating upside down above a long table around which Lord Voldemort is holding a meeting of the evil. • Lord Voldemort takes Lucius' wand, making the latter nervous, and breaks it.
  • As Harry and others made to look like him take flight through the clouds, various Death Eaters suddenly attack. Wand blasts are fired back and forth (and some Death Eaters are hit), while others chase after Hagrid and Harry (in a motorbike and sidecar) as they zip through traffic and a tunnel, with various close calls (and cars being hit or crashing, etc.). Back up in the air, Harry's owl hits one Death Eater, but is then hit and falls from the sky. Lord Voldemort and Harry then blast at each other with their wands (the power from both sides hits in the middle in a stalemate fashion), followed by Lord Voldemort losing and taking down some electrical towers and related lines in the process. One person magically made to look like Harry is fairly wounded (lots of blood on his neck) while we hear that Mad-Eye died during the attack.
  • Remus grabs Harry and shoves him back against a wall to test/prove that he's the real person.
  • A ball of energy and light invades a wedding reception, states that the Minister of Magic is dead and that 'they are coming.' • Kreacher and Dobby are all over a thief as they bring him back to Harry, Hermione and Ron, with Kreacher occasionally poking at the man.
  • Harry zaps one worker and we see that Ron and Hermione have done the same to others (who are similarly asleep or unconscious), all so that they can assume their looks and infiltrate the Ministry of Magic.
  • Harry unleashes various little devices that cause small explosions and some smoke in a Ministry of Magic assembly room, panicking the workers there.

Hermione has his blood on her hands as she uses magic to heal him.
