This version of Acronis is for virtual servers on VMware. Unlike some other products Acronis virtual edition does not charge per VM which I think is a great advantage. They charge per host which means you can have as many VMs as you want on each ESXi host and it will backup all the VMs on the host. You do not need to install a client on each VM. You deploy virtual appliances on each host and these backup the VMs. Each appliance can backup multiple VMs. And you can deploy more than one appliance per host for the same license. This helps if you have a lot of VMs and need to back them up in a short time. It is a very robust application and has never failed me. It does the backups really well and you have the occasional failures like any other software but its real ace is the recovery. Acronis recovery works really well and I have never had a failed recovery if the backup has been successful. You can also recover a single file if you want. This version also has VSS option so it will backup DB files in a proper state and these can be restored as a file though I would not recommend using this as the sole DB backup option. This should only be used for full or partial server backup. Other functions include password protected encryption, pre and post backup command execution, compression, backup splitting, notifications, logging, replication to another location and some others. One of the best features of this product is that if you have a backup from Acronis Advanced Server (used for physical servers) then you can recover the server as a VM. This is great in DR situation and also if you want to virtualize your physical server (p2v).

The complaints I do have is that when version 11 was released it was a rushed release and they had too many bugs. It was so buggy that I found more than half the functions did not work, logs would not display properly and too many backup failures. At the time of version 11 release Acronis's UK office was right next to the company I was working in and we had their Dev team, support guys and also our Acronis Account Manager at my desk for weeks while they were troubleshooting and trying to fix all the issues. Since then they have fixed many of the issues. Version 11.5 is a vast improvement but still required some fixes initially.I hope they have learned from their mistakes and continue to improve their QC process.

I have been a big fan of Acronis since I first started using version 9 but after I used version 11 I would never recommend Acronis version 11 to anyone. However, the current build of version 11.5 is a solid build and works really well and I would recommend it to others.
